Hlepful tips for editing your book

April 2nd, 2013 - Comments Off

It seems like almost everyone has something to say these days. With movies and TV shows from CableTVAdvisor.com, you’ve probably seen many stories that started out as books. To get a book to movie form, it takes great writing and careful editing.

Oftentimes people want to put their words on paper and even create a book about their story, whether it be fact or fiction. However, it isn’t the writing portion that usually slows a person down, it is the editing portion. There are certain tips and techniques you want to consider when editing a book.

These tips and techniques will allow you to properly edit a book, and maybe even give you a little insight on some dos and don’ts of book editing. Here are some things to consider.

Book Editing Tips

1. Consistency is Important: Nothing is harder to read and/or understand than a book that is inconsistent and jumps all over the place without finishing thoughts. Sure, some books are purposely laid out this way, but they are still put together properly for the reader to understand. Be consistent when editing and make sure your book flows well and is cohesive.

2. Read Out Loud: This may sound like a tip that isn’t that important, but try it. Read your book out loud as you edit. You will find that reading it out loud will help you find more errors in grammar, spelling and overall flow of the book.

3. Be Hard on Yourself: It is extremely important for you to be hard on yourself during editing. Be very critical of your work because others will be as well. These self criticisms will lead to you revising content to make to book better.

4. Format Properly: Oftentimes formatting is overlooked. However, this is actually one of the more important aspects of editing. Make sure your formatting is cohesive and correct. How does your layout look on the page? Did you use proper grammar, titles, subtitles, etc?

5. Third Party Review: Always have a third party review your book after you have edited it. You will want to make sure it is a trusted third party, but at the same time pick someone you know will critique hard and offer suggestions and fixes.

Editing a book doesn’t have to be hard, but you do need to take your time and make sure the little things are taken care of.
